The seven best Moscow locations for international couples
1. Red Square and Saint Basil's Cathedral
The signature Moscow backdrop. The cathedral and the GUM department store facades give you 360 degrees of iconic Russian architecture. The square itself is open and free to photograph from public ground. Tripods are technically restricted but a hand-held compact camera works. Best times: 6 to 8 AM in summer for soft light and minimal crowds, or 4 to 6 PM in winter for the cathedral lit against snow.
2. Patriarch's Ponds (Patriarshie Prudy)
The literary heart of Moscow, the setting of Bulgakov's Master and Margarita. Quiet park with ponds, bridges, ivy-covered buildings and tree-lined paths. Excellent for autumn shoots (mid-September to late October) and winter walking shots.
3. Sparrow Hills (Vorobyovi Gory) and MGU campus
The Stalin-era Moscow State University tower from the panoramic observation deck. Sweeping city views, the river bend below, and the imposing brutalist symmetry of the MGU building as backdrop. Best in late afternoon for golden light on the building, or sunset for cityscape behind you.
4. Tsaritsyno Palace and Park
Catherine the Great's estate at the southern edge of Moscow. The palace courtyard, fountain plaza and tree-lined paths give you fairy-tale Russian estate backdrop. Public park, free to photograph. Excellent year-round but particularly photogenic in winter under snow.
5. VDNKh and the Cosmonautics fountain
The Soviet-era exhibition complex with gold-statue fountain (Friendship of Peoples), monumental pavilions, and the Cosmonauts Monument with its silvery rocket-on-launch silhouette. Free to enter and photograph, no permit needed for individual sessions.
6. Gorky Park riverside and Krymsky Bridge
The central park along the Moskva river with the pedestrian Krymsky bridge in the background. The Garage Museum, fountain plaza and tree-lined embankment work for both summer and winter shots. Krymsky bridge at twilight against the Stalin skyscraper skyline is one of the most-requested Moscow love-story setups.
7. Moscow City (International Business Centre)
The skyscraper cluster on the western bend of the river. Glass towers, the Federation Tower observation deck (Panorama 360), and the Bagration pedestrian bridge across the river to the Expocentre. Modern, dramatic, and a striking contrast with the historic Red Square backdrop. Best at dusk when the towers light up.
Permits and what is and is not allowed
For a couple's session with one photographer carrying camera, hand-held lighting and basic gear, no permit is needed at any of these public locations. You can walk in, shoot for 1 to 3 hours, and leave.
What requires a permit (and we handle on your behalf when relevant):
- Studio-style lighting kits (stands, large softboxes) on Red Square: technically requires Moscow City Hall permit, rarely enforced but be ready to move if asked
- Tripod use inside Tsaritsyno Palace interiors: park ranger permit, applied 5 days in advance, fee around 3 000 ₽
- Drone footage anywhere in central Moscow: prohibited in the No-Fly Zone around the Kremlin, regulated elsewhere
For 95 percent of love-story sessions, we use available light, hand-held reflector, and a 1-bag setup. No permit needed.
Seasonality matters
Spring (April to May): cherry and apple blossom in Kolomenskoye and Tsaritsyno. Soft light, often overcast, excellent for portraits without harsh shadows.
Summer (June to August): long evenings, midnight sky still blue. White-night-style shots at Krymsky bridge or Moscow City possible. Heat midday 25 to 32°C; we recommend morning or evening sessions.
Autumn (mid-September to late October): Patriarch's Ponds and Tsaritsyno turn red and gold. Most photogenic season in Moscow but weather is unstable, book with a 2-day flexibility window.
Winter (December to February): the most distinctly Russian aesthetic. Snow on Red Square, ice fountains, frosted parks. Cold (often -10 to -20°C) so we recommend 60-minute compact sessions plus indoor cafe breaks.
